Ohlone shellmounds around the bay

For thousands of years Ohlone communities built mounds of shell, ash and their own dead along the shoreline, hundreds of them ringing the bay, some sixty feet high and visible from the water. Nearly all were levelled for fill, paint works and parking. The Emeryville mound became an amusement park and then a shopping centre, which is still there, on top of it.
