The Ohlone lived on this island in Richmond harbour for thousands of years and left shellmounds, the main one carbon dated back around 2,000 years. From 1892 to 1938 limestone was blasted off its south side and shipped out for San Francisco's Embarcadero seawall, the Carquinez Bridge, the Bay Bridge toll plaza and the Berkeley Marina. In the 1960s a gun club whose members included Bing Crosby and Trader Vic Bergeron leased it for shooting. The park district took it back in 1988 and the only public access now is a guided tour.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
