Oak Park grows sevenfold in ten years

Oak Park became a city in 1945 and then went from about 5,000 residents to more than 35,000 in the following decade. Federal housing rules that pushed veteran mortgages toward new construction outside Detroit brought much of Metro Detroit's Jewish population here. When I-696 was cut through, the highway department built wide pedestrian bridges so the Orthodox neighbourhood on either side could still walk across.
