Swiss, German and Austrian machinists brought the schiffli loom to these towns from the 1870s, and Robert Reiner of Weehawken made himself the American agent for the German machines that turned it into an industry. West New York's growth in the early twentieth century ran on it. By 1948 the 428 manufacturers working in North Hudson produced about ninety percent of all embroidery made in the United States, and Union City later put the schiffli shuttle on its municipal seal.
