Bannerman's arsenal on Pollepel Island
1901

Frank Bannerman bought up the surplus of the Spanish-American War, some ninety percent of the captured stock, and needed somewhere to keep two hundred tons of ammunition away from the city. He built a Scottish-baronial castle on an island in the Hudson and advertised his business on its walls. It exploded in 1920, burned in 1969, and the shell is still standing.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
