Newark is founded by Puritans looking for a stricter colony

When New Haven Colony was folded into the more tolerant Connecticut Colony, a group of Puritans from Branford, Milford and Guilford decided to leave rather than share the vote with men outside their church. Captain Robert Treat arranged terms with Governor Carteret and in 1666 they settled a plantation on the Passaic, keeping church membership as the condition of a say in the town. The congregation they founded still stands on Broad Street in a meeting house built in the 1780s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
