New Salem, where Lincoln arrived with nothing

Menard County, Illinois

He came off a flatboat at twenty-two, failed as a shopkeeper, split rails, ran the post office, taught himself law and left six years later for Springfield. The village itself failed too and was gone by 1840. What stands is a reconstruction on the original site, built in the 1930s from the surveys and the recollections of people who had lived there.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
