Neptune Beach secedes from Jacksonville Beach in a tax revolt
1931
Neptune Beach, Florida
Dan Wheeler built a railway halt beside his own house in 1922 and called it Neptune, on the reasoning that a station obliged the train to stop for him. The name spread to the neighbourhood, which Jacksonville Beach absorbed in 1925. On August 11, 1931 residents voted 113 to 31 at a filling station on Atlantic Boulevard to break away, and the smallest of the beach towns has run its own city hall ever since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
