Naval Station New York, the homeport that lasted four years
1990
Stapleton, Staten Island, New York

The Reagan administration's Strategic Homeport plan spread the fleet across more congressional districts, and Stapleton was chosen to berth a battleship group built around the USS Iowa. A pier was driven into the waterfront and offices and housing went in at Fort Wadsworth, about 266 acres in all. The Iowa was decommissioned after a turret explosion, the base opened in 1990, and it was on the closure list by 1993 and shut in 1994.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
