Museum of Latin American Art, on the lot where Balboa made silent films

From 1913 to 1918 this block was Balboa Amusement Producing Company, one of the busiest silent film studios on the West Coast. A roller rink called the Hippodrome took over the site in the late 1920s. Health care executive Robert Gumbiner bought the empty building in the 1970s, hung his Latin American art in his medical offices, and opened it as a museum in 1996. It is the only museum in the country devoted to modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art.
