Mount Olivet, the first perpetual care cemetery in the South

Perpetual care meant the cemetery set aside part of every sale to maintain the grounds forever, instead of leaving upkeep to families who moved away or died out. Mount Olivet took its first burial in 1907 and was the first in the South run that way. The 130 acres northeast of downtown now hold more than 70,000 graves, including much of the city's founding generation.
