Mosswood Park, the estate that spliced two surnames together

J. Mora Moss built a Carpenter Gothic mansion on this ground in 1864 and named the estate by joining his own surname to that of his wife Julia Wood. The city later bought the property and kept it open, and the four acres now hold a recreation centre, ball fields, courts, dog runs and the old lawns. It is one of the few pieces of 1860s Oakland landscape left north of downtown.
