Missouri opens the first public university west of the Mississippi

Boone County citizens raised over $117,000 in cash and land, a serious sum on the frontier, to outbid five other counties for the state university. It later founded the first school of journalism in the world, in 1908, on the argument that reporting could be taught as a profession rather than picked up in a newsroom.
