Dr. William Mayfield began taking patients into his own home in 1884, and the operation formally opened as the Missouri Baptist Sanitarium in 1886. It ran a horse and carriage ambulance by 1892 and opened a nursing school in 1895. The hospital, known locally as MoBap, moved out to Town and Country and now runs several hundred beds as part of BJC HealthCare.
