Mineral City becomes Ponte Vedra Beach
1928
Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida
Engineers found ilmenite, rutile and zircon in these dunes in 1912 and built a mining camp called Mineral City, whose sand went into weapons production during the First World War. The National Lead Company bought the operation in 1920, shut the mining down by the end of that decade and rebranded the beachfront as a resort, lifting the name Ponte Vedra off a map of Galicia in 1928. The club built here later cut the first island green ever made, at the ninth on its Ocean course.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
