Chanute brought his biplane gliders to the Miller dunes in 1896 and made hundreds of manned flights off the sand, work the Wright brothers drew on directly. The park now holds a mile and a half of Lake Michigan beach, dunes, wetland and oak savanna, and is completely surrounded by Indiana Dunes National Park. Its Chanute museum is registered as a National Landmark of Soaring.
