The country club came first, laid out on farmland in 1898, and the town that formed around it took the club's name and incorporated in 1927. In August 1914 the course hosted the US Open, where a 21 year old Walter Hagen held off the amateur Chick Evans by a single stroke. It was the first of the eleven major titles Hagen would win.
