The Gloucester City Water Works Engine House
1883
Gloucester City, New Jersey
Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A small industrial city built its own waterworks in 1883 and put the pumping engines in a brick house solid enough to still be standing. Municipal water was the difference between a mill town and an epidemic in the 1880s, and Gloucester City paid for its own rather than wait. The engine house was listed on the National Register in 1998.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
