Metairie Cemetery, the graveyard laid out on a racetrack by a blackballed man
1872
New Orleans, Louisiana
The name misleads almost everyone: the cemetery is inside the New Orleans city limits on Metairie Road, not in Metairie. The ground was the Metairie Race Course, whose Jockey Club refused Charles T. Howard as new money after he made his fortune on the Louisiana State Lottery. Howard and his partners bought the failing track in 1872 and turned it into a cemetery. The designers kept the oval, so the avenues still follow the shape of the racecourse.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
