Merrymount, where Thomas Morton raised a maypole and Plymouth sent soldiers
1627
Merrymount, Quincy, Massachusetts

Thomas Morton took over a trading post on this ground in 1626 and renamed it Ma-re Mount, which everyone heard as Merrymount. In 1627 he put up an eighty foot maypole and threw a party that ran for days and mixed colonists with their Native neighbours, and he traded guns to the latter. Plymouth sent Myles Standish to arrest him in 1628 and shipped him to England. Morton came back, was deported a second time, and the settlement was burned in 1630.
