Merrill Lock No. 6, the abandoned lock that made the Ohio navigable
1904
Industry, Pennsylvania
The Army Corps of Engineers broke ground here in 1892 and opened the lock in August 1904, the second of ten built to turn the shallow, seasonal Ohio into a river barges could use year round. It was named for Colonel William E. Merrill, the engineer who worked out the movable dam system that made the scheme possible. A bigger lock downriver at Montgomery replaced it in 1936, and the lockhouses left behind spent twelve years as a restaurant before closing in 2012.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
