Dashields Locks holds the Ohio deep enough for barges
1929
Glenwillard, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Ohio below Pittsburgh is not naturally deep enough to float loaded barges, so the Army Corps built a staircase of dams to hold it at a working level. Dashields opened in 1929 and still passes roughly 450 commercial lockages a month. The main chamber is 600 feet by 110 feet, with a shorter recreational lock beside it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
