Camp Skokie Valley, from CCC barracks to a POW camp
1933
Blue Star Memorial Woods, Glenview
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
The camp went up in 1933 to house Civilian Conservation Corps crews digging the Skokie Lagoons out of the marsh. The CCC left in 1942 and the Army took the site for the 740th Military Police Battalion, which guarded defense plants across the Chicago and Milwaukee area. Part of the camp held German prisoners of war in 1945. Only archaeological traces of it remain in the forest preserve.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
