Martinsville, the paperclip
1947
Martinsville Speedway, Ridgeway, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The only track left from NASCAR's first season, a half mile shaped like a paperclip where the corners are so tight that brakes glow and tempers go, which is why it is the sport's best short track argument. Winners get a grandfather clock made in the county rather than a trophy. The concession stand sells a red hot dog that people genuinely plan the trip around.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
