In May 1668, under the governorship of Philip Carteret, land on the western slope of the ridge was sold as the New Mais Land. Caspar Stienmets, who sat as a judge of the court at Bergen, took a lot of close to a hundred acres of meadow and woodland. The name is simply maize, the corn grown on the flat ground below the cliffs. The same stretch later went by New Durham.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
