Fairmont City, built around a zinc smelter
1913
Fairmont City, Illinois
American Zinc, Lead and Smelting put an ore processing plant outside East St. Louis in 1913, and the village chartered beside it filled with Croatian, Czech, Polish, Spanish and Mexican workers. The mix kept shifting. The Hispanic population doubled in the 1990s and by 2020 was better than three quarters of the village, which had by then absorbed the ground where the stockyards town of National City used to stand.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
