Lennox is about a square mile of unincorporated county wedged directly under the approach to LAX, and the noise decided its schools. In 1977 the Centinela Valley board voted to close Lennox High rather than pay to soundproof it, over local protests, and a federal judge later barred the site from ever being a high school again. The district's other two high schools were mostly white while Lennox was mostly Latino, which made the closure a segregation fight as much as a noise one. The campus reopened in 1985, soundproofed, as a middle school.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
