Simeon Leland, proprietor of one of Manhattan's grand hotels, spent 1855 to 1859 raising a sixty room Gothic Revival mansion on high ground in New Rochelle to a design by the city architect William Thomas Beers. Wings went on in 1899 and 1902. The College of New Rochelle grew up around the castle and absorbed it into the campus.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
