Leisure City was named to sell retirement
1964
Leisure City, Florida
Developers gave this stretch of South Dade its name to sell the idea of retirement, platting roughly 2,300 acres of pine and farmland. It grew to about 6,000 houses and drew military retirees from Homestead Air Force Base a few miles east. Residents lobbied the county for nine years before a park opened here in 1964. The census place swallowed the older settlement of Modello, which sits in its northwestern corner and is where Ed Leedskalnin built Coral Castle.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
