Dreamland Villa, one of Arizona's first retirement subdivisions
1959
Mesa, Arizona
Joe and Ross Farnsworth broke ground on the first section of Dreamland Villa in 1958 and opened it in January 1959, restricting it to buyers 55 and over. The model came from Youngtown on the other side of the valley, and it worked: within fifteen years the development had grown to about 3,000 houses on the far east edge of Mesa. It is one of the reasons the East Valley filled up with retirees decades before it filled up with commuters.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
