Larry Doby goes from Eastside High to the American League
1947
Eastside High School, Market Street, Paterson, New Jersey
Doby moved to Paterson at fourteen and played four sports at Eastside High. On July 5, 1947, eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson, he became the first Black player in the American League, and the first to go straight from the Negro leagues to the majors with no minor league season in between. In October 1948 he hit the first home run by a Black player in a World Series and Cleveland won the title. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1998, and Paterson renamed the Eastside Park ball field for him in 2002.
