The Rockwall-Forney Dam closed across the East Fork of the Trinity River in 1967 and deliberate impoundment began in December 1968, filling roughly 22,700 acres. It was called Forney Lake first, for the town just downstream. The City of Dallas owns the dam and the water even though the lake spreads across Dallas, Kaufman, Collin and Rockwall counties, and Interstate 30 crosses it on a causeway. Rowlett went from a rail village to a lakefront suburb because of it.
