Lady Deborah Moody charters Gravesend
1645
Gravesend, Brooklyn
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Moody was tried in Lynn, Massachusetts over her Anabaptist beliefs and took excommunication rather than recant. Willem Kieft granted her and a party of English settlers a land patent on December 19, 1645, on ground his forces had taken from the Lenape. Gravesend was the only English chartered town in what became Kings County and one of the first in America founded by a woman. It ran to 7,000 acres and took in the whole of Coney Island until Brooklyn annexed it in 1894.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
