Kings Bay becomes the Atlantic home of the Trident submarines

The Army bought this stretch of Camden County marsh in the 1950s for an ammunition terminal it barely used. A 1976 agreement with Spain required the ballistic missile submarines based at Rota to leave by 1979, so the land went to the Navy, the base was commissioned in 1978, and in 1980 it was chosen as the Atlantic home port for the new Ohio class. The submarines and the freighters bound for Fernandina use the same channel through Cumberland Sound.
