A Trident submarine's sail surfaces in a field at Kings Bay
2000
St. Marys, Georgia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The ballistic missile submarine George Bancroft ran deterrent patrols from 1966 until 1993 and was cut up for scrap in 1998, but local submarine veterans fought to keep the sail. They set it on an earthen hull shaped and coated to look like a hull breaking the surface, and the exhibit was dedicated at the Franklin Gate of the Kings Bay base on 7 April 2000 for the submarine force's hundredth year. Drivers on the road west of the base see what looks like a submarine coming up out of a Georgia field.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
