Kensico was founded in 1889 when Manhattan's graveyards were filling up and the railroads made rural burial practical. Sergei Rachmaninoff is buried here, along with a great many other performers of the early twentieth century. The cemetery set aside a section for members of the Actors' Fund of America and the National Vaudeville Association, a good number of whom had died broke, which is the part of show business that does not usually get a monument.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
