1861
Richmond, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The largest ironworks in the South, making about half the Confederacy's artillery and the armour for the Virginia, and the main reason the capital was moved to Richmond. Much of the skilled work was done by enslaved men the company hired from their owners.
