Jingletown, named for the coins in the mill workers' pockets

Portuguese and Azorean men worked the California Cotton Mills and the canneries along this pocket of estuary shore from the early 1900s, a good number of them arriving by way of expired labour contracts on the Hawaiian sugar plantations. The name comes from their habit of walking the streets with a week's wages loose and jingling in their pockets, a deliberate show of having got somewhere. The mill buildings hold artists' lofts now and the name survived the industry.
