Jesuits open St. Stanislaus Seminary with enslaved families in tow
1823

The Belgian Jesuit Charles Van Quickenborne traveled west from Maryland in 1823 with seven novices, three lay brothers and three enslaved African American couples, and started a novitiate on farmland outside Florissant. The stone building the novices later raised took from 1840 to 1849 to finish. St. Stanislaus ran longer than any other Jesuit novitiate in the country before it closed in 1971.
