Jack O'Neill and the wetsuit
1952
Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The water here is about fifty-five degrees and surfing it meant twenty minutes and then a fire on the beach. O'Neill experimented with foam and then neoprene until he had a vest that let a person stay out for hours, opened a shop, and put the whole cold half of the world's coastline into play. He also lost an eye to his own invention, the surfboard leash.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
