Washington Irving, the first American to make a living purely by writing, remodelled a Dutch tenant farmhouse into a cottage of stepped gables and wisteria and called it snug as a wren's nest. He had already invented Rip Van Winkle and the Headless Horseman, largely fabricated the Knickerbocker Dutch New York everyone now half-believes, and popularised the word Gotham.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
