Hunters Point Library and the shelves nobody could reach
2019
Hunters Point, Long Island City, Queens
Steven Holl's 41 million dollar branch library opened on the East River in September 2019, built around a staircase climbing past tiers of book stacks. Only one of the four stack tiers could be reached by wheelchair. The Justice Department opened an investigation within a month and identified 95 violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, disability advocates brought a class action, and the city later sued the architects over the cost of putting it right.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
