The Verne Cox Center opens twelve years before the ADA
1978
Burke Road, Pasadena, Texas
Pasadena opened this municipal recreation centre in 1978 for residents with physical and intellectual disabilities, twelve years before the Americans with Disabilities Act. The 15,000 square foot building holds a gym, a pool, a weight room and two wheelchair accessible softball fields, and its programmes take people from age five into their nineties. An annual wheelchair tournament still runs out of it.
