Horseshoe Curve
1854
Altoona, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Pennsylvania Railroad bent its main line around a mountain bowl in 1854 and conquered the Alleghenies. The curve was so vital to war freight that Hitler put it on the target list for the saboteurs landed by U-boat in 1942, who were caught first. Trains still grind around it all day, and Altoona built grandstands so people can watch, which they have now done for 170 years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
