Holy Cross sits on the river side of the Lower Ninth Ward, cut off from the rest of New Orleans when the Industrial Canal opened in 1923. River pilot Milton Doullut and his wife Mary built themselves a house here in 1905 modelled on a steamboat, galleries for decks and chimneys for stacks, then built a second for their son in 1913. Both became city landmarks in 1977 and both came through Katrina.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
