Hobart, the town George Earle laid out around his dam on Deep River
1849
Hobart, Indiana

George Earle dammed the Deep River in 1845 to turn a gristmill, then platted the town four years later and named it for his brother Frederick Hobart Earle. The water backed up behind that dam is Lake George, still sitting in the middle of the city. Clay in the ground kept brickyards working here into the 1920s. Hobart incorporated as a town in 1889 and as a city in 1921.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
