John Carman and the Reverend Robert Fordham, two Englishmen out of Stamford in Connecticut, negotiated the tract from Lenape holders in 1643 and brought families across the Sound the following spring to settle it, inside territory the Dutch claimed. They named it for Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire. Everything administrative on this end of the island grew out of that one settlement: the Town of Hempstead, the Town of North Hempstead, and eventually Nassau County. The village is now the most populous in New York State.
