Hawthorne Plaza stands empty for 25 years
1977

The mall opened on Hawthorne Boulevard in 1977 with about 135 shops, a JCPenney and a Broadway. It closed in 1999 and then simply stayed there, sealed and rotting, for a quarter of a century while redevelopment deals fell apart. Film crews used the dead corridors for Minority Report, Tokyo Drift and Gone Girl. A court order finally set a demolition deadline in 2026.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
