Harbor View House, the Army and Navy YMCA above the harbour

Five storeys of Spanish Colonial Revival went up on the bluff in 1926 as an Army and Navy YMCA for the soldiers at Fort MacArthur and the sailors coming off the docks: 300 dormitory rooms, a gym with a running track above it, a pool, a boxing room and a coffee shop. Something over four million servicemen passed through during the Second World War, and Bob Hope and Lucille Ball came down to entertain them. It went civilian in 1947, and from 1967 until 2018 it ran as Harbor View House, a licensed 204-bed residence for people with mental illness, one of the largest of its kind in California.
