NOAA designated this estuary a national research reserve in 1999, one of thirty in the country and one of three in Florida. Its core is the Guana peninsula, land the state bought from Gate Petroleum and ran as Guana River State Park before the reserve absorbed it in 2004. The protected water runs behind the barrier islands across St. Johns and Flagler counties, from the Tolomato River south to the Matanzas.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
